The Center for East Asian and Pacific
Studies (EAPS) is the steward of campus-wide teaching, research,
programming, and outreach on East Asia, as well as Southeast Asia
and the Pacific. EAPS serves almost 100 affiliate specialists on
East Asia, as well as over 30 off campus affiliates across the
state. EAPS strives to broadly support the research, teaching,
and service missions of the University of Illinois.
EAPS, along
with its consortium partner the East
Asian Studies Center (EASC) at Indiana University, is currently
a Title VI National
Resource Center Consortium for East Asia devoted to the enhancement
of campus teaching and learning on East Asia and to outreach
programming on East Asia for educators, the public, and media
and business professionals. EAPS houses the Asian
Educational Media Services (AEMS) with a comprehensive web-based
database of multimedia resources on Asia. EAPS is also home to
the Freeman
Fellows Program, a University of Illinois-China exchange
program launched in 1996. Over the years EAPS has welcomed over
150 scholars in the humanities and social sciences from China
and nearly 200 University of Illinois faculty and students have
traveled to China.
In 2005-06 EAPS, in
coordination with EALC, presented East Asia Undisciplined, a year
of challenging conversations across disciplinary boundaries. In 2006-07
EAPS and Indiana
University’s East
Asian Studies Center launched the IL/IN
East Asia Initiative in which both campuses seek
to draw upon and enhance each other’s
research, teaching, and outreach resources. EAPS and EALC recently
launched The East
Asia Graduate Certificate to service the many Ph.D. and Master's
candidates focusing on East Asia across the social sciences and
professional schools.
EAPS
was established in 1964 as the Center for Asian Studies. In 1984
the center was renamed and in 1990 the Department of East
Asian Languages and Cultures was established in the College
of Liberal Arts & Sciences to house faculty and course offerings
in the language and humanistic study of East Asia. |
